♪ the greatest love of all "good morning america." this morning -- breaking news. one of the world's greatest singers has died. whitney houston, found dead in a beverly hills hotel room at the age of 48. on this morning before the music world's biggest celebration, shock and sadness as the world reacts to this sudden loss. so many questions this morning about ha caused her death. we have the latest on the investigation and her constant battles with her addictions. new details about her struggles over the last 48 hours. ♪ how will i know if he really loves me ♪ and we honor her amazing talent. her incomparable voice, called a
natural treasure. every song, unforgettable. that made her one of the best-selling artists, ever. this morning, we celebrate the life and the legacy of whitney houston. ♪ and i will always love you the unmistakable voice of whitney houston. still so hard to believe. good morning, everyone, george and i are here with dan and bianna. they have been working throughout the night covering this story, the death of a music legend. >> that's right, whitney houston only 48 years old. we don't have a lot of details on what happened yet. no official cause of death. but we do know that she was found in her bathtub at the beverly hilton hotel. >> it all happened gonzales the backdrop of one of the biggest parties of the year. inside the same hotel as her beloved mentor, clive davis, holding his pre-grammy bash.
with music's biggest stars. >> it was this same party back in 1983, that davis introduced whitney to the music industry. she became an instant star. so many mega mitts through the '80s and '90s. at last night's party was expected to honor the six-time grammy winner. instead it became a memorable. everyone from tony bennett to alicia keys paying tribute. we'll celebrate her career throughout the program. right to abc's cecilia vega who joins us from the beverly hills hotel in los angeles. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. it happened here at 3:43 yesterday afternoon when a member of houston's entourage located her body inside this hotel. so far, police and the coroner are refusing to offer details on what may have caused her tragic death. exactly what happened inside the iconic beverly hilton remains a mystery. paramedics raced to the fourth floor and found a lifeless whitney houston inside her hotel bathtub. they tried in vain to resuscitate her with cpr. >> at 3:55 p.m., this afternoon,
whitney houston was pronounced dead at the beverly hilton hotel. >> the scene inside her room was chaotic. abc has learned that it appears that members of her entourage found her unresponsive body and called hotel security. but just about a half-hour earlier, her mother cissy spoke to her daughter and said nothing was out of the ordinary. houston's cousin dionne warwick also reportedly spoke to her over the phone earlier in the day and said everything seemed fine. houston was staying at the hotel to attend music industry executive clive davis' annual pre-grammy bash. it is the same event where she was introduced to the record industry nearly three decades ago. hours after the death, the part city still went on, but the screen was surreal. the beverly hills crime lab parked outside. paparazzi camped outside, waiting for houston's body to emerge. inside, a star-studded lineup of
speeches and songs. her final days were marked by questions about her sobriety. houston's stay at the beverly hilton involved heavy partying according to news reports, and then early friday morning, what would become houston's final performance. ♪ she sang a duet with grammy nominee kelly pryce at a party at a hollywood nightclub. houston was there with her daughter having a good time. but after cheers on stage, these photos of the disheveled, bloated and agitated houston leaving. she reportedly had blood dripping down her leg, scratches on her wrist and had to be escorted from the club. but the people who knew her said that she was simply sweating from her performance. >> there was nothing wrong. there was nothing wrong. she she was singing. she was dancing, she was laughing, she was playing. i'm going to remember her just like that. that's the whitney i always had the pleasure of being around. >> the pop superstar would be dead the next day. now, one report says that whitney houston was found with prescription drugs inside her
room here at the beverly hilton and that may she have drowned in the bathtub. whatever happened, the coroner said if an autopsy is performed it could be a day or two before that's done. robin? >> and until then, we just don't know. cecilia, thank you. houston's ex-husband, bobby brown, actually learned the news just as he was going on stage to perform in memphis. he told the audience, quote, i love you, whitney. the hardest thing for me to do is come on this stage. bianna has been tracking reaction to whitney's death including at celebration that just broke up a while ago. all they were talking about on the red carpet. >> good morning, robin. whitney houston was supposed to be a great of honor at clive davis' party last night. instead, celebrities paid tribute to a legacy, expressing their sadness and their shock. throughout the night, most of music royalty was at that huge pre-grammy party, sharing their thoughts and memories about the music legend. >> music heals. things go on. but without a doubt, we have lost a magnificent talent.
>> i'm sad. we have a lost a great, great, great voice. >> i loved her very much. and i miss her very much. >> reporter: inside the party, music heavyweights paid tribute with words and songs. >> whitney houston simply put had the greatest voice in the world. >> talk about whitney. i would be like -- ♪ i wanna dance with somebody >> on twitter, thousands posted messages, many from music industry royalty. ♪ miracles from mariah carey who collaborated with whitney on their duet "when you believe." heart broken and in tears, over the shocking death of my friend. the incomparable miss whitney houston. she will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth. to barbra streisand -- she had everything -- beauty, a magnificent voice. how sad her gifts could not bring her the same happiness it brought us.
and on cable tv music heavy weights called to share their thoughts about houston's gift. >> i called up clive davis because i'm on the same label at sony columbia and i said, clive, you got the right artist. that's one of the greatest singers that i have ever heard. >> whitney's own idol and god mother, aretha franklin, said that she just can't talk about it now. so stunning and unbelievable. i couldn't believe what i was reading coming across the tv screen. meanwhile as the news broke, houston fans gathered from the streets of l.a. -- ♪ i wanna feel the heat with somebody ♪ >> to new york's apollo theater. >> whitney houston. >> during a performance last night in las vegas, elton john was on stage telling his audience this is a sad day today. she was the most beautiful woman i ever saw and one of the most beautiful voices i ever heard. i think a lot of people would agree with him. >> i think a lot of people do. and on twitter last night, it was like a universal hug. people coming together and
wanting to remember her and there's something that somebody put down and said, we have to remember that a daughter lost a mother and a mother lost a daughter last night. that is something to keep in mind. >> and an entire community lost a daughter. we're going to go there now. newark, new jersey, a look at live pictures of baptist church, in newark, new jersey. where a young whitney houston first started singing. they're going to hold a special celebration this morning. across the country, tributes sprung up almost instantaneously. now, we do know that whitney houston's life was a complicated one filled with great achievements and also so much trouble. here is dan harris. >> good morning to you. the pictures from new jersey say so much. this was a woman who was quite literally born to sing. but whitney houston saw much of her hard-fought success fall away as her marriage to bobby brown descended into the jealousy, rage and substance abuse. ♪ and i will always love you >> that incomparable voice. ♪ because the greatest love of all ♪
>> those golden pipes. ♪ i'm every woman >> that range. from soft and sultry to rough and raspy. to overwhelming power. for nearly 20 years, whitney houston was one of the world's best-selling artists with seven number one hits, eight platinum albums and 55 million records sold in america alone. music was in her blood. she was born in east orange, new jersey. her mother, a gospel singer. her cousin, dionne warwick. and her godmother, aretha franklin. houston first got noticed while singing in her church choir at the age of 9. at age 20, she was signed by the legendary record producer clive davis. >> to hear this young girl sent the proverbial tingles up my spine. ♪ how will i know >> her self-titled debut album sold millions and launched instant hits that are still in regular radio rotation.
including "how will i know" and "saving all my love." it became the golden girl of american pop and she made the nation fall in love with her and rise together while singing the national anthem at the super bowl during the first gulf war. ♪ and the rockets' red glare >> she was not only lightning in a bottle on the charts but also a major draw at the box office. >> it wasn't really a mystery to me when whitney houston ended up in "the bodyguard." she was just a true beauty and such a musical instrument. >> but her personal life was filled with sour notes, the drug use, the three stints in rehab, the public breakdowns, and that turbulent relationship with bad boy bobby brown. >> i'm not doing this for him. >> the couple eventually divorced after 15 years of marriage. but the years of drug abuse had
clearly taken their toll. her voice, diminished. album sales declining. and she was rumored to be near death several times because she looked so thin. in 2009, that one last glimmer of hope, her album "i look to you" went platinum, a reminder of happier times, but a comeback sadly that was not sustainable. while there is no denying the turbulent side of her life, she leaves behind a sturdy legacy of music. which we're going be hearing all morning. one that is likely to to transcend her troubles in the long run. one that crosses all sort of cultural boundaries. robin and george, my first consent as a boy in boston, whitney houston. >> all right, dan, houston, as dan was saying, incredibly talented. we all know that. we're familiar that she had her troubles as well. "entertainment weekly" covered her sensational rise and fall.
editor jess cagle is here. she owned the '80s and '90s. her influence still being felt today. >> exactly, like you said, we're all familiar with the story. it's very sad, actually. but that ten years, between 1985 and 1995, we had never seen anything like that. i mean, that will be her legacy. and she, you know, "i will always love you." and all of those songs that she sang. she also had a tremendous cultural impact in, you know, mariah carey, celine dion, kelly clarkson, christina aguilera. her influence is felt in that power that she brought into mainstream. and into pop music, tremendous impact. much the same way elvis presley brought, you know, a different kind of music into the mainstream. one thing that is less significant to that, but also important, remember "the
bodyguard," she and kevin costner had an interracial relationship, remember that was 1992. that was very unusual at the time. they did it in the movie without comment. it was a very quiet watershed moment. >> and you can say that about a lot of things in her career. i remember, she was the first black woman to be on the cover of "seventeen" magazine and just, i remember the last time i saw whitney, 2009, our concert in the park, her big comeback. her mother is there. her daughter is there. and it was such an emotional time and many of us were just so hopeful. and i have heard this over and over again that people are shocked by what has happened. but not surprised. >> it was -- it was sort of a long time coming. it was our worst fear for her. what is interesting throughout those years, we knew that she was troubled and that awful reality show with bobby brown, there wasn't a secret that she
was troubled. but there was a lot of hope. even that last album, her voice wasn't great, not a great album but people bought it. you know, we forget, it did go platinum. everybody wanted whitney to come back. we kept hoping and we kept hoping. >> people were rooting for her. they were. >> they were. >> so much more to say. jess, thanks very much. as whitney became a superstar, it became so hard for her to hide her struggles with drugs. at times, she didn't even try. it was also clear in that infamous interview with diane sawyer back in 2002, it began with questions about whitney's ravaged looks and drug use. >> i grant you, that's right. i partied. but there's times that i know i was going through a lot of emotional sadness and my eating habits were awful. >> whitney dying, crack rehab failed. >> first of all, let's get one thing straight, crack is cheap. i make too much money to ever
smoke crack. let's get that straight. okay? okay, we don't do crack. we don't do that. crack is whack. >> is it alcohol? is it marijuana? is it cocaine? is it pills? >> it has been at times -- >> all? >> at times. >> if you had to name the devil for you, the biggest devil among them? >> that would be me. my life, my heart. what i want and what i don't want. nobody makes me do anything i don't want to do. it's my decision. but the biggest devil is me. i'm my best friend and worst enemy. and that's how i have to deal with it. >> how scared did you get?
>> um, scared. when they said i died, i did, i changed my mind. i changed my mind. yep, because i didn't want to look like the rest of them. i didn't want to be like them. it frightened me. i don't ever want to be in the realm of where i'm caught in a mold and i can't get out. never. over it. i'm beyond it. >> do you think you came close? >> i think as close as anybody i can get. i don't think i can come closer. that's as close as i want to be. as close as i think it gets. >> and how sure are you that those bad days you talked about are behind you? >> i know that i'm -- i'm on the right path because i'm back home where i started.
in here. i can't tell you it's all going to be perfect, diane. and i can't -- >> because, everybody says it's day by day. day by day. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. >> now do you say not at all? or do you say -- >> i'm not going to tell you that. i could tell you that i'm not self-destructive. i'm not a person who wants to die. i'm a person who has life and wants to live. and always has. and it's a mistake, anything else other than that. >> are you strong enough to do that now? >> i think so. >> and not let it get you? >> yes, i am. >> because most people -- >> i pray every day, diane. i'm not the strongest every day, but i'm not the weakest, either, and i won't break.
and i won't break. >> is today a good day? >> today is a great day. >> no the mid-'90s, you said, i feel old. >> yes. like i have been through a lifetime of stuff. >> and it wasn't any fun anymore? >> no. i enjoy what i do. i love to sing and have fun. >> because -- >> people are different in the industry. it's about the money. it's about get it fast. >> do you think you're not tough enough for that business? >> oh, i'm tough enough. >> that was a quick answer. >> yeah, i lasted this long. you have to be tough. >> for the people out there who say, we want to help build a barrier between her and drugs, what do you want them to pray for? >> don't pray about the drugs, leave the drugs alone. >> why, why? >> pray for me. as a person. for my soul that i'm stronger.
i don't care what anybody else says or did or what they claim i was. i know i am a child of god and i know he loves me. jesus loves me, this i know. >> it's such a revealing interview. the pain is so close to the surface. >> 2002 is when that took place. diane had a wonderful relationship with whitney houston. was very close. and she was one of the happiest people that i saw when whitney came back to us in 2009 at the concert and diane and i were backstage and see her watching whitney and see the interaction between the two. >> that was a triumph. >> it was a triumph and that was 2009. and the park, people just showing such love for her and we were saying, with jess, really rooting and wanting her to make the comeback. and again, we don't know the circumstances completely yet.
>> we'll find that out in the next couple days. you have seen that outpouring of love again. overnight. let's turn to bianna. with other top stories. good morning, everyone. george and robin, everyone at home. mitt romney has bounced back after losing three straight contests tuesday, giving his campaign a much-needed boost. romney nearly won maine's republican caucuses, edging out ron paul, the only other candidate to have agreessively complete in the state. romney also earned key support from conservatives, winning a straw poll at an important gathering at washington. be sure to stay tuned to "this week" later this morning, george will have much more on the republican race with rick santorum. and more than 1,000 people turned out in tacoma, washington, saturday to mourn the death of susan powell's sons. 7-year-old charlie and 5-year-old brandon powell were laid to on rest six days of their father, josh, killed them and then himself. their grandfather chuck cox said we know they're with their mother now. susan powell has been missing for two years and is presumed dead. prince william is breaking with recent royal tradition by
extending his military service, the prince is reportedly planning to stay in the royal air force beyond next year. when his current tour ends. the reason, he hopes to start a family away from the spotlight of royal duties. the duke of cambridge is serving currently as a search and rescue helicopter pilot in the falklands island. and finally, at least one person is a newly minted millionaire this morning. at least one winning ticket was sold for the $336 million jackpot, the third largest in the game's history, the ticket was sold in rhode island. and time now for weather and ginger zee, who is lucky enough to be out in the freezing cold this morning in times square with the weather. >> that's right. >> good morning, ginger. >> good morning. okay, okay, february, we get it. you're here and you'll feel it not only in new york city, but it's one degree colder in atlanta, if you can believe it or not. let's look at the numbers this morning, as we begin our sunday, 21 new york, 20 atlanta. all of the southeast feeling that cold. the wind chill, not a lot

musical icon but also as you can see here, a movie star. also ahead -- we're examining those lingering questions, the mystery surrounding her death, all that we know right now is she was found in her bathtub at the beverly hilton hotel. >> we remember, at the peek of her career, she was the golden girl of the music industry, one of the best-selling artists in the world, for more than a decade. from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s. >> she sold so many records, made so many memories for so many people. she wowed the critics and audiences with that towering, majestic voice. abc's chris connelly joins us now with more on whitney's legacy. chris, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, that voice just gave you goose bumps, guys, every time you heard it. it was mesmerizing right from the start to the many peaks of that astonishing career. shimmering. ♪ i wanna dance with somebody soaring. ♪ i get so emotional spectacular. ♪ the greatest love of all
even in an era blessed with pop divas, whitney houston's voice was the greatest of her generation. from playful dance pop such as the 1985 single "how i will know." ♪ how will i know to mighty power ballads like "one moment in time." ♪ give me one moment in time and her never to be outdone national anthem. ♪ o say does that star spangled banner ♪ at the super bowl in 1991 amid the gulf war. a star spangled banner for its time and all time. ♪ though i try to resist musically she was a once in a lifetime preacher, a singer who looked like a supermodel and
had grown up singing in a new jersey gospel choir. slow songs like "you give good love." ♪ you give good love and "greatest love of all" would unsale her to the world. with their power, range and intensity. ♪ learning to love yourself but her capacity to blast up-tempo tracks like, "i wanna dance with somebody" launched her into the mtv stratosphere. ♪ i wanna dance with somebody she seemed fresh, fun, irresistibly enthusiastic. joyful, the epitome of glorious youth. ♪ i'm every woman as unattainable as her sheer talent must have seemed, it was the ideal for so many great voices after her. from jennifer hudson to alicia keys, beyonce and lady gaga all acknowledged whitney houston's influence. ♪ we almost had it all yet, whitney houston would never had a truly successful concert
tour. the late '90s, the records were fewer and the concerns about her plentiful. her comeback album in 2009 saw her singing in lower keys than she once had. subsequent performances did little to quiet fears. that our extraordinary vocal instrument was gone. her voice could now be filled forever with even more heartbreaking than the passion that soared to perhaps her best-known recording. done for the film "the bodyguard." whose title is today on the lips of millions of her devoted fans. the original song they wanted her to sing also, has a sadly apt title, "what becomes of the broken hearted." >> i got to tell you, chris, we here with dan and bianna, every video, that's right. just remembering her so much. we're joined on the phone by jennifer holliday. the grammy winning singer and tony winner from "dream girls." jennifer, thank you so much for taking time to share your memories with whitney this morning. i know that you have known her since the early days, right, jennifer? >> yes, yes, robin. good morning. >> and your fondest memories this morning? >> my fondest memories, her warm and kind heart. she was a friend to you, and she was always trying to help people. she tried to help me when i had sunk at my lowest after losing my home. going through many problems. she was trying to help me, help me get jobs, introducing me to
people. she was even going to hire me to sing at a birthday party. she was not a complicated or dark person. and one thing about her is that she did know -- she didn't talk about politics or anything like that. but she did snow about love. she and i had a fight one time. she sang at the america music awards. >> and i was so upset with her. and i yelled at her and i cursed her out and stuff. she called me and said, i don't want us to fight. how can i fix this? so, we became very close after that, because i couldn't believe that she cared about my feelings and it was at a time where she also had opted to write the "dream girls" movie 25 years ago, and she had a refusal. and she was trying to figure out how to have better songs. not like how they wrote two songs for beyonce. but they didn't figure that out
back then. she was singing my stuff. she said it's not because i'm trying to hurt you. it's because i admire you and i like your songs, so i sing "so you love me" because i love you. >> such a thoughtful, thoughtful person. jennifer, let me ask you -- >> very thoughtful. >> a final question, jennifer hudson who you clearly influenced. word is that she will be sings a tribute to -- at the grammys for whitney houston. what do you think they should do tonight at the grammys to properly honor whitney houston? >> well, i think that a little bit of all of it is proper, because she is a church girl, i think that she missed that greater part, i think it's so appropriate that jennifer hudson will be singing, because she's also a church girl who has an incredible dynamic voice and range and i think that whitney would be so very happy about. >> i would agree on that. jennifer holliday, glad you're doing well. appreciate you joining us this

♪ how will i know ♪ how will i know ♪ how will i know ♪ how will i know >> everybody remembers that song and this morning, we're learning more about the final days of whitney houston. with me here in the studio is kate cohen. the assistant managing editor of "people" magazine. kate, good morning. >> good morning. >> thank you for coming in. what are you hearing from your reporters and sources about what whitney was doing in the days before? >> just a few shorts day ago, and i think you showed the photos earlier. there was a pre-grammy party whitney was seen leaving afterwards not looking so good. at "people" magazine, when we saw those photos there was a collective intake of breath. there was a clear sign that whitney was not on the straight and narrow. something was wrong once again. >> given that, did anybody really see this coming, death at the age of 48? >> no. i don't think anyone ever expects the death of anyone at the age of 48.
really, this was the sort of thing there was always a perpetual hope that there was a true come back around the corner for whitney. that still really didn't happen yet. >> she had a movie coming out this summer. >> she had a movie coming out this summer. reports from the set of that film was that she was very focused. very clear-headed. she delivered a fantastic performance. >> there is one clear victim here and that is her daughter, bobbi kristina, how has she been doing in recent years? >> in recent years, there were reports not that long ago in tabloids that she might be struggling with addiction herself. those have been unsubstantiated. but our understanding is that as of last night she's completely hysterical. and inconsolable. >> as robin roberts said before, there is a daughter who lost her mother and a mother who lost her daughter. very quickly, if there is one song she will be remembered for? >> "i will always love you," without a doubt. it was number one for weeks and weeks. incredible run there. i believe it was number one for perhaps three months.
